Supplements & Performance Enhancers / Question
Published: May 9, 2001

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Hi, I am a 14 year-old male who just started using creatine serum. I have only used it 4 times, 3 times the recommended dosage, 1 time under the recommended. I have started to notice hair coming off my head. I would swipe my hand through my hair and 5-10 strands would come out. I switched this shampoo (Really Shiny Hair-Freeman) to St. Ives shampoo. I also noticed some dandruff that I never had. I would like to know if it is from creatine or some type of hormonal imbalance. Response would be highly appreciated.

Dear 14 Year Old Using Creatine Serum,

TeenHealthFX strongly urges you to stop taking Creatine supplements. Creatine has gained notoriety in recent years as a supplement taken to enhance muscle mass and strength. Since it is still a fairly new supplement, much of the long-term research in terms of side effect is still not known. For more information click on Creatine Questions.

It is complicated to know whether your hair loss is a result of your use of Creatine. Some people have made similar complaints of hair loss but a scientific link has not been established. It is highly unlikely that a shampoo would cause your loss of hair. Your best move would be to talk to your doctor and let him/her know your concerns about your use of Creatine. Your doctor will monitor the situation, which most likely will resolve itself on its own.

If you are in need a doctor, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center For Health at 973.889.6350 for an appointment.
