Published: May 13, 2003
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I am a 13 year old girl and I have a VERY fast metabolism. I hate being so skinny, and no matter how much I eat I can barely gain weight. I hate how I look! I'm 5'1" and I only weigh like 83 lbs and its gross-do you have any ideas of how I can gain weight easier and faster? Thank you!

Dear Anonymous - Hate Being Skinny,
Each individual's metabolism functions at a different rate. Recognizing how your body and metabolism work are key to being healthy. Yet, our bodies may need some outside regulation to help them stay in proper working order. Being too under or overweight is extremely detrimental to growing bodies.
According to the Body Mass Index calculator Appropriate Height and Weight, you have a BMI of 15.7. Healthy BMI's are between 19 and 24, anything below or above this range merits a visit to your physician.
You should see your doctor so that he or she can perform tests and rule out any major underlying conditions. Many factors including your age, sex, progress in puberty, exercise habits, health history and eating habits all affect your ability to gain and maintain your weight. Your doctor will be able to examine all these factors and advise you on how to create a healthy eating plan aimed at maintaining a target weight.
There are no easy and quick ways to gain weight. Eating a healthy balanced diet and seeking professional medical assistance when needed is key to maintaining a healthy body.
