Problematic Eating Habits / Question
Published: October 13, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Since September I have had no appetite whatsoever. I have tried to maintain a healthy appetite even though I'm never hungry, but I get frustrated sometimes. Also, I haven't had a period for several months, and before that it didn't stop for months. What is wrong with me?

Dear No Appetite, No Period For Months,

TeenHealthFX is concerned that you have had a lack of appetite for such a long time. While we do not know why you have stopped getting your period, we do know that women who do not maintain enough body weight often stop menstruating.

We strongly recommend that you see a doctor who can evaluate you and recommend treatment, if necessary. If you do not have a doctor and you live in Northern New Jersey, please call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.6475. If you live elsewhere, get in touch with your local adolescent health center or clinic. Let the doctor know about your lack of appetite and your irregular menstrual cycle. He or she will be able to offer you more information and get you the help you need.
