Height / Question
Published: July 30, 2001

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I'm a 19 year old male and I go to the gym a lot. My height seems to be stationary after going to the gym, since I was about 16 or so I haven't seen any growth in my height, so what do you recommend I do?

Dear Not Growing At 19,

Your body and height will only grow to a certain point. Every individual has a predetermined height that is really out of your control. A good judge of how tall you will be is to look at your family, how tall is your dad, mom, brothers and grandparents. Remember that the genes controlling your height have come from them. If you feel that there may be another problem do not be afraid to ask your doctor. Do not give up hope there still is a chance that you may grow a few inches. But this could also be the height that your body is comfortable at. People come in all different heights, weights and colors its what makes us beautiful.

Exercise is a good way to keep healthy. The male body develops and grows later than the female body. Men usually get their biggest growth spurt between 16-18 years of age, but it is different for every male. Some men grow rapidly as early as 13 and some have even been known to grow into there twenties. So do not get discouraged yet. The fact that you have been going to the gym regularly since the age of 16 should not be a cause of concern unless you are taking steroids or are over working you body in any way. Steroids can cause growth in your muscles, but can be very harmful to your body. If you feel that your body may be over worked and that is why your height has not changed you may want to consult a doctor or trainer at your gym.
