Height / Question
Published: October 18, 2001

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am 14 years old and am curious about my height. I am 5'6". Also, I wear size 10.5 Nikes. I am curious if there is a way of estimating when I will stop growing, and how tall I will be.

Dear Curious About Growth,

The conclusion of puberty will be your signal that your body has stopped growing. Since the onset and duration of puberty varies greatly among people there is no exact age when the process is complete. Most people stop growing between the ages of 17-21.

It is impossible to predict what your eventual height, as an adult will be. Final height is dependent on:

  • Your parents' heights
  • Your health status
  • Your ethnic background

Foot size is not an indicator of future height.

You can get a ballpark figure of your height by adding your parents' heights and dividing by two. However, we advise that you not go out and buy your future wardrobe based on this calculation.
