Dear TeenHealthFX,

2 days ago I injured my upper left back pretty badly and it still hurts when I run and when I take a deep breath or bend over. I have basketball practice and games; specifically a game tomorrow and I want to know if I will reinjure it worse or if I’m supposed to be resting. It seems to hurt worse then everyone thinks it does.

Dear Injured Upper Left Back,

TeenHealthFX knows that lots of teens struggle to have a speedy recovery following an injury so they do not have to miss out on too much of their favorite sports or activities. However, it is really important for to you to try focus on making sure that you do not injure your back again or make your current condition worse.  We've answered some other questions regarding back pain; please check out the answer to Lower Back Pain.

Unfortunately, we cannot diagnose your problem over the Internet, so we cannot say how long you will have to stay on the sidelines. TeenHealthFX strongly encourages you to seek medical attention from doctor. Until you can speak to a doctor, try to take it easy and rest so you do not make yourself too uncomfortable. If you don't have a doctor and live in northern NJ you can contact the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973.971.6475 for an appointment. Outside of the area call your local hospital for a name of a pediatrician or Adolescent Medicine doctor.
