Confused About Whether To Drink

Published: December 19, 2013
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I'm confused about drinking. I kind of want to drink because when I'm at parties it looks like the people drinking are having so much more fun. But I also know that drinking can be bad for you and obviously I know teens aren't supposed to be drinking. But I'm really torn and I don't know what to do.

Dear Confused About Whether To Drink,

TeenhealthFX understands that you are feeling in a difficult position in terms of figuring out how to deal with the issues surrounding underage drinking – issues that many adolescents think about and deal with. While drinking may appear fun and enticing, it sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders since you are aware that this behavior has its dangers and is also illegal. It sounds like your gut feeling is giving you some kind of warning against drinking – otherwise you would have already tried it. FX encourages you to continue to follow your gut and abstain from underage drinking. Real fun should not be confused with the recklessness, destruction and physical after-effects that are often associated with underage drinking. Feeling physically ill, vomiting, doing or saying things you may regret later, being in a position to face legal consequences – the fact is that those things are not fun. In addition, girls need to take drinking very seriously because they can get taken advantage of more easily when under the influence.

FX appreciates that drinking and partying may appear like the “it” thing to do – but remember that there are definite down sides to drinking that should be looked at and taken into consideration. In addition, there are definitely teens out there who do not see drinking as the “it” thing to do and find other ways of having fun and spending free time – you might that making friends and spending times with teens where drinking is not that important will feel more comfortable to you. It is obviously up to you what you decide to do – and FX hopes that you will make a decision that feels right for you and that takes you safety and overall well-being into consideration.
