I Have Finally Decided to Quit Dipping

Published: December 19, 2013
Dear TeenHealthFX,

I’m 15 years old and dip tobacco. I have finally decided to quit dipping. I saw some non tobacco dip on the internet and thought it might help me quit the nicotine addiction. I plan on making some with mint and other mint like herbs.  All I need is something to hold it all together. I was making thinking honey or food grade glycerin maybe. Please help!! I know this sounds crazy but please help.

Dear I Have Finally Decided to Quit Dipping,

Congratulations on making a great decision that will benefit your health enormously. Quitting any form of nicotine can be challenging because of the side effects that come with nicotine withdrawal. However, with the proper support more and more people are having success beating their nicotine habit.

Substituting something to help with the oral urges can be a big help. Making your own chew is not necessary since there are many smokeless products sold over the counter with different flavors including mint. Homemade concoction can be great but you always want to be careful when mixing various ingredients together because you don’t know how they will interact. You may want to consider other substitutes for cravings like sucking on hard candy, chewing carrots, or chewing gum.

Try contacting your local hospital or health clinic to see if there are any smoke stopper groups available or find activities such as going to the gym to take your mind off the situation. Spending time with friends who do not smoke or avoid situations where you know people will be smoking is also a good idea.

If you find you are having a hard time giving up nicotine speak with your doctor and see what other options he/she thinks would be appropriate for you to get over the nicotine cravings. You are doing a good thing for yourself, hang in there.
