Dear Why is There Blood on the Toilet Paper?,

If the blood on the toilet paper is from rectal bleeding, it could be from something like an anal fissure. Anal fissures are tears in the lining of the anus that can result from straining during constipation, passing hard stools, or forceful diarrhea. Hemorrhoids are engorged sacs that have resulted from the swelling of blood vessels in the rectum or anus. It would be less likely that you have hemorrhoids as they generally become more common as people age.

Blood on toilet paper for a teen girl might have nothing to do with rectal bleeding, but could be due to menstruation. Most girls are between 9 and 15 when they have their first period. And when you have your period, a bloody fluid comes out of your vagina for a few days. Some girls may experience cramps, but others may not feel any pain or cramps before or during their period.

TeenHealthFX cannot know whether the blood you found on the toilet paper was from rectal bleeding or was due to menstruation. A trusted adult, such as your mother, an aunt, or a school nurse could certainly help you to know if this is your period or not if you give them the details of what you are experiencing. If you (and the adults around you) are not sure what the bleeding is from, then FX recommends that you schedule an appointment with your doctor.  If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
