Dear What are the Chances of Pregnancy?,

In order for pregnancy to occur, the sperm found in pre-ejaculatory or ejaculatory fluids needs to come into contact with the vagina. Primarily this occurs from having unprotected vaginal intercourse. However, both pre-ejaculatory and ejaculatory fluids contain sperm, and thus, if either were present on your boyfriend’s penis when he inserted himself into your vagina, it is possible that you are pregnant.

The only definite way to determine if you are pregnant is by conducting a pregnancy test. You can purchase a test at your local pharmacy, drug store and/or grocery store. If you are not comfortable conducting this test on your own, FX encourages you to schedule an appointment with your doctor so he/she can conduct the test for an accurate result. Keep in mind that pregnancy tests are most accurate when conducted after a missed period.

FX recommends you read our Resource of the Month: Planned Parenthood Resources on Safer Sex where you can learn about sexual readiness, birth control, STDs, emergency contraception, pregnancy tests and more. It would also be a good idea to discuss these issues with your primary care physician or an adolescent medicine specialist. If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.

Since you are sexually active, FX recommends scheduling an appointment with your doctor in order to discuss birth control options. He/she can help you decide which method is best fit for you.
