14 YO Growth And Development Stopped

Published: May 14, 2012
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I'm 14 years old. I don't know if what's happening to me is normal. I think my growth and development stopped. My height was 150 when I was 11. Up to now, I'm still 150 cm and hadn't grown any taller. I'm underweight- I'm 85 pounds. My breast size is still 32 A, which has been my breast size since I was 11. So is the size of my feet, which is size 4. I don't know what's happening. I used to be kinda tall before. I even had my period when I was 10 years old. I used to be more developed than the others. Please tell me what to do. I want to look like a normal 14-year old girl.

Dear 14 YO Growth And Development Stopped,

Puberty can be confusing sometimes, especially since it varies so much from person to person. Some people are early bloomers, but that does not necessarily mean that they will be done growing early too. Puberty typically takes place over a 5-year period, but can sometimes take up to 10 years to reach completion, so you never know. Also, most people stop growing between the ages of 17-21.

There are many factors that affect your eventual growth and development. These include (1) your parents' heights, (2) your health status, and (3) your ethnic background. Breast size is similarly affected by your health status and by the breast size of your mother, grandmothers, and aunts.

While growth and development is predetermined and generally out of our control, you should not be afraid to voice your concerns to your doctor. He or she may be able to help you determine where you are in your growing process. So do not give up hope because your body may not be done developing. If your body is comfortable with the size it is now, however, that is okay too.

People come in all different shapes and sizes. That is what makes us unique.
