Question About Stress and My Period

Published: April 25, 2017
Dear TeenHealthFX,
My period is late but I've had a lot of stress up until 3 weeks ago but now I don't have any stress. It was supposed to come in the 17th but it's the 21st today. I am not sexually active.

Dear Question About Stress and My Period,

Periods can be late for a number of reasons. One reason is pregnancy, although since you are not sexually active that would not be a consideration for you. Other reasons can include stress, poor diet habits, certain medications and even the normal irregularity which can occur for some girls in the first few years after the start of menstruation.

That said, your period might be 4 days late because of the significant stress you were experiencing. It could also just be irregular (which can occasionally happen) if you are still in the first few years of having started your period for the first time.

If you continue to go without a period, find that your periods are often irregular, or have any other questions or concerns about your menstrual cycle, then TeenHealthFX recommends that you meet with your primary care physician, gynecologist or an adolescent medicine specialist.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
