Dear are mental health problems genetically related?,

This is a great question and conversation. It is important for people to understand how these things work because in some cases, if you can work on something ahead of time it can prevent conditions or mental health illnesses from progressing.

Yes, mental health conditions can be genetically related but that is only part of the whole picture.  Genetically related means something runs in the family genes. Mental health conditions like depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and schizophrenia can be genetically related. If something is genetically related, it does not mean the person is 100% certain to get the condition but their chances are much higher.

On the other hand, the environment / lifestyle that someone experiences growing up can also trigger some mental health conditions. Individuals who grew up in an abusive, traumatic, neglectful, or drug abused household are also at a higher risk to develop mental health conditions.

Understanding genetics and how it plays a role in mental health is very complicated, the explanation above is watered down so everyone can understand. If you have more questions about how genetics and environment play a role in menta health please ask a trusted adult (guidance counselor, coach, teacher), your parents, or a doctor.

If you need help finding a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist.
