Dear Can You Have Your Period and Be Pregnant?,

Your period occurs when the thickened lining of your uterus sheds, after an egg fails to implant that month. When a fertilized egg does implant itself, the uterine lining supports a growing fetus. Therefore, pregnant women do not experience a menstrual period.

However, it is possible to have bleeding during pregnancy for a variety of reasons. Some women experience spotting throughout pregnancy that can be confused for menstruation. Other times bleeding can indicate problems with the pregnancy.

If you have concerns that you may be pregnant, you should schedule an appointment with your physician or take a home pregnancy test. If you are having unprotected sex, you should follow up with your doctor, regardless of the pregnancy test results to discuss birth control options. It is recommended that you use a condom during every sexual encounter, however you may want to consider also using another form of contraceptive such as the pill. Your doctor will be able to help you to choose the best contraceptive option for you.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
