How Can I Find Out if My Girlfriend is Pergnant?

Published: November 07, 2016
Dear TeenHealthFX,

Hi my girlfriend and I have had unprotected sex a couple times now in the past 2 weeks. She's been on the pill for about a year now and has not missed a day yet. Though she will sometimes take them within the same 2 or 3 hour span each night. I did not ejaculate inside of her but she is saying she is experiencing bloating as of late and as a teen it is extremely scary to think this as a possibility. Could anyone please confirm or deny she is pregnant? Any ideas to prove yes or no without a test at this point?

Dear How Can I Find Out if My Girlfriend is Pregnant?,

TeenHealthFX can absolutely appreciate how scary it can be for a teenager to have to deal with an unplanned pregnancy, so we can understand your anxiety right now. However, if you did not ejaculate during sex and your girlfriend has been taking her pill every day, then it is very unlikely that she is pregnant. It is possible that her bloating is due to her menstrual cycle or something she ate – it does not mean that she is definitely pregnant.

Keep in mind that TeenHealthFX cannot know for sure whether your girlfriend is pregnant or not. The only way to know for sure is with a pregnancy test. If your girlfriend misses a period, she should take a pregnancy test after the missed period or schedule an appointment with her primary care physician, adolescent medicine specialist or gynecologist who can give her a pregnancy test. Sometimes a pregnancy test can give accurate results within a few days of an expected period, however, they are most accurate when taken after a missed period.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.

In addition to taking a pregnancy test or meeting with a doctor if your girlfriend misses her next period, FX recommends the following:

  • The pill is definitely more effective when taken at or around the same time every day. It would be helpful for your girlfriend to start doing this. If this is difficult for your girlfriend, she may want to discuss with her doctor whether an alternate method of birth control (such as the birth control shot) would be a better choice for her.
  • The two of you may want to consider using condoms in addition to birth control. Condoms will provide extra protection against unwanted pregnancies, as well as protection against the transmission of STDs. Since the thought of dealing with a pregnancy is so understandably scary to you, you might feel some peace of mind with this added protection.
  • It is important for you and your girlfriend to be educated about various things connected to your sexual health so that you can make healthy decisions for yourselves. FX recommends checking out the links in our Resource of the Month: Planned Parenthood Resources on Safer Sex so that you can learn about sexual readiness, how pregnancy happens, birth control, STDs, emergency contraception and more.
