Why Does My Vaginal Area Always Itch if I'm a Virgin?

Published: December 13, 2016
Dear TeenHealthFX,

I have never been sexually actively, but my vaginal area always itches. Which is confusing for me considering I've never done anything sexual or anything in that case Is it still possible that I have an std or what could it be?

Dear Why Does My Vaginal Area Always Itch if I'm a Virgin?,

Most genital itching and irritation isn’t a major concern, but it is good idea to check in with your primary care physician, gynecologist or adolescent medicine specialist about it so that you can find out the specific cause and get any needed treatment.

Vaginal itching, burning and irritation can be caused by things such as bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, or chemical irritants (scented toilet paper, laundry detergents, fabric softeners, creams or soaps).

Vaginal itching, burning and irritation can also be caused by various STDs, such as chlamydia, genital herpes, genital warts, trichomoniasis, and gonorrhea. However, if you’ve never been sexually active or in any kind of physically intimate relationship, then these would not be likely causes for the itching you are experiencing.

Again, it is best to check in with a doctor so that you can get an accurate diagnosis and any needed treatment. If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
