Birth Control Pill To Regulate My Period Not Working

Published: May 14, 2012
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I started taking Birth Control pills about a month ago because i'm sixteen, and had never had a period. So, less than a week into taking it i got my period, and ever since i have been completely miserable. Right now, i've been on my period for 20 days straight, and i'm always nauseous, and cramp REALLY bad. should i stop taking this pill and try to switch to another, or should i wait this one out, and see if it gets better?

Dear Birth Control Pill To Regulate My Period Not Working,

TeenHealthFX recommends that you contact the physician who prescribed your birth control pills for you. Your symptoms could be due to a side effect of the medicine, or it could be a sign of something else going on such as an STD or pregnancy. It is important for you to speak to your physician about this so that he/she can evaluate the reason for your bleeding and cramps and provide whatever treatment is necessary to effectively address these symptoms.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-6475 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
