Sperm Wasn't at the Tip of Condom

Published: May 14, 2012
Dear TeenHealthFX,

Okay so I was having sex with my boyfriend a couple of days ago and I was on top. When he ejaculated, the sperm wasn't at the tip of the condom like it should have been, it was at the bottom like at the entrance of the condom. Does this mean there was a hole in the condom or was it because he was lying down?

Dear Sperm Wasn't at the Tip of Condom,

If you are using a condom properly, no "cum" (ejaculatory fluid) should get out of the condom no matter what position you are in.  Here are some basic rules to follow:

·         Open the condom packet at one corner being careful not to tear the condom with your fingernails, your teeth, or through being too rough. Make sure the packet and condom appear to be in good condition and have not been punctured. Make sure to check that the expiration date has not passed.

·         Place the rolled condom over the tip of the hard penis, while pinching the tip of the condom enough to leave a half inch space for semen to collect. If the penis is not circumcised, pull back the foreskin before rolling on the condom.

·         Roll the condom all the way down to the base of the penis, and smooth out any air bubbles. (Air bubbles can cause a condom to break.)

For more detailed instructions check out Using Condoms Correctly.

In your case it sounds like either your boyfriend did not leave any space for semen to collect in the condom and it overflowed out the side or there was a tear in the condom. In either case if you have any concerns it would be in your best interest to do a Home Pregnancy Test especially if you miss your next period.
