Dear Should I Take The Morning After Pill?,

There is sperm present in “precum” that can lead to pregnancy. While there is a greater chance that you would be pregnant if he had ejaculated during penetration, the fact is that it is definitely possible for pregnancy to occur after “pulling out.” You can speak to a healthcare professional about emergency contraception – but this is something you need to do immediately as this method of birth control is most effective when used within 72 hours following sexual contact (although it can be used up to 120 hours after unprotected sex).

To learn more about emergency contraception, please read “Emergency Contraception” and “What Does The Emergency Contraceptive Pill Do?” under the Birth Control Methods of the Sexuality and Sexual Health section of the website.

When you meet with a healthcare professional about this, FX strongly recommends that you discuss with him/her safer sex methods for you to prevent against unwanted pregnancies and the transmission of STDs. You can also read our question “Updated Birth Control Information” to learn about the types of birth control methods available, as well as the birth control methods most recommended for teens.

You could meet with your primary care physician or gynecologist to discuss either of these issues. If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-6475 for an appointment or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. You can also contact Girl’s Street – A Young Woman’s Health Program – at 908.522.2555.
