Could Emergency Contraception Make me Miss my Period

Published: May 14, 2012
Dear TeenHealthFX,

My boyfriend and I had unprotected sex. I took the emergency contraceptive pill within the hour. About a week later I had some spotting which lasted about 2 days. It’s been over 6 weeks since my last period. I just took a pregnancy test and it was negative. Could the EC made me miss my period or is my body trying to tell e something?

Dear Could Emergency Contraception Make me Miss my Period,

Missed periods are not uncommon after taking emergency contraception.  The best course of action is to take home pregnancy to test to see if you are pregnant.  Next, if you still haven't had your menstrual period by 6 weeks, consult with your doctor.  A missed period can occur depending on when the emergency contraception was taken within your cycle.  If your menstrual cycle is most likely normal, it is probably offset by the high hormone dosage in the emergency contraceptive pill.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health in Morristown 973-971-6475 or the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health in Summit at 908-522-5757 for an appointment. Outside this area contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood.
