Missed Depo Shot

Published: September 30, 2013
Dear TeenHealthFX,

Dear TeenHealthFX, I missed my depo shot and wasn't given it until after five months while on my period. Does it still act immediately because I was given the shot again while on my period?

Dear Missed Depo Shot,

If you get the Depo-Provera shot within the first seven days of your period, you are protected from pregnancy immediately.  However, the shot works best when you get it every 12 weeks.  According to Planned Parenthood’s information on the Birth Control Shot (Depo-Provera), lless than 1 out of 100 women will get pregnant each year if they always use the birth control shot as directed. About 6 out of 100 women will get pregnant each year if they don't always use the birth control shot as directed.

It is possible to become pregnant as soon as three-four months after your last shot, so receiving the shot every 12 weeks is important to protect against pregnancy in the future.

TeenHealthFX would like to remind you that although the Depo-Provera shot is extremely effective at preventing pregnancy when used as directed, it does not protect against Sexually Transmitted Diseases.  We strongly advise the use of condoms in conjunction with the shot for the best protection against both STDs and pregnancy.
