Dear Hard Areas In Breasts,

TeenHealthFX cannot give you an accurate diagnosis over the web – and it is difficult for us to speculate on possible causes without more specific information about these “hard” areas. If by hard, you mean your boyfriend could feel hard lumps in your breast, this could be result of a benign lipoma, fibroadenoma, a result of some kind of trauma or injury to your chest area, or an epidermal cyst. Breasts can also go through changes during puberty. The breast is composed of several glands and ducts, and the changing levels of hormones during puberty can cause these ducts to grow and can also cause the fat deposits in the breast tissue to increase. So the changes in how your breasts feel could simply be related to puberty.

Again, FX cannot give you an accurate assessment of what exactly these hard areas are, so please see your primary care physician, a gynecologist, or an adolescent medicine specialist as soon as possible. If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-6475 for an appointment or Girl’s Street – A Young Woman’s Health Program – at 908.522.2555. You can also contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood, or call your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.

In addition to visiting the doctor to find out what these hard areas are, it would also be beneficial for you to learn how to perform self-breast exams so you will be aware of any changes in your breasts that could signify a need for medical attention. It is recommended that women perform self-breast exams on a monthly basis by at least 20 years of age. You can read The National Breast Cancer Foundation article on Breast Self Exam and discuss proper breast exam procedures with your doctor.
