Could Something Be Wrong With My Nipples?

Dear Could Something Be Wrong With My Nipples?,

Most of my friends seem to have nipples that stick out, but mine don't. I've definitely started puberty and my breasts already started to develop. So I know it's not that I just haven't started puberty or something. Is something wrong that my nipples are like this?

It is possible that you have inverted nipples, which basically means they are more like slits rather than sticking out. Many girls and women have inverted nipples and it doesn’t mean anything is medically wrong or that breastfeeding will one day be a problem.

The next time you meet with your primary care physician, adolescent medicine specialist or gynecologist you can ask your doctor whether he/she has any concerns about the shape of your nipples. But most likely this is just another one of those normal differences between women’s bodies.

For more information you can read the Center for Young Women’s Health article on Normal Breast Development.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
