Dear What Is Causing My Girlfriend's Bleeding After Sex?,

There could be a couple of reasons for the bleeding. It could be something called breakthrough bleeding, which often happens if the pill is not being taken at the same time (or very close to the same time) every day. If your girlfriend was on her inactive pills at the time it could have been her period. If it was the first time the two of you had sex, it is possible there was some minor bleeding as a result of that. It is also possible that your girlfriend may need to be on a different pill. If she is taking the pill as instructed, especially taking it at or around the same time every day, and she is experiencing breakthrough bleeding (spotting), she may need a different type of birth control pill.

TeenHealthFX recommends she discusses this with the doctor prescribing her pill. This is the kind of information that doctors want to know about so they can find out if the pill is being taken as it should, if a new kind of pill is needed, or there is another issue that needs to be addressed.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
