Unusual Vaginal Discharge

Published: April 30, 2015
Dear TeenHealthFX,

I'm a 15, almost 16 year old female who is sexually active and supposed to get my period in about 2 weeks from now. Lately I have been having clear, unpleasant smelling, super thick vaginal discharge that's mucous like. On top of that, I've had very bad stomach pains and feel nauseous lots whether I eat or not, I sometimes feel dizzy and I have frequent headaches. I'm starting to get really worried and have no idea what this could be, please help.

Dear Unusual Vaginal Discharge,

Not going on with your body can be frightening but giving you a bunch of possibilities will do little to reduce the fear. Vaginal secretions are the body's way of keeping the vagina healthy by maintaining a proper acidic environment.

Since your amount of discharge, the smell and the consistency (curdy or clumpy) has changed and you have had other physical symptoms TeenHealthFX feels you should have this checked out by a physician as soon as possible. Very often symptoms like this are your body’s way of alerting you to an infection, such as overgrowth of yeast. Discharge-What's Normal, What's Not and Yeast Infections give excellent lists of difference between normal vaginal discharge and what is evidence of infection.

While waiting to see the doctor:

  • Do not have sex because you may make the smell or irritation worse and possibly pass it on to your partner
  • Do not douche as douching is not good for you anytime in your life unless a doctor prescribes this for you
  • Do not scrub your vaginal area - Wash using a mild soap.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health in Morristown 973-971-6475 or the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health in Summit at 908-522-5757 for an appointment. Outside of this area you can contact Planned Parenthood or a local teen health center.
