Painful Bumps On My Vagina That Last 2-3 Days

Published: July 14, 2015
Dear Painful Bumps On My Vagina That Last 2-3 Days,

Hi, about a month or two ago I got a small, painful bump on the inner lip of my vagina. I told my mom about it but she said it was normal. It went away in a couple of days. Then, a couple days later I got another one. That one went away and a little while later I got another. This has continued for awhile. I've never had more than one at a time but they're always painful and last 2-3 days. I am not sexually active, though I read somewhere that wearing thongs may cause something similar and I do wear thongs frecuently. Any advice or ideas on what it is? thank you.

Dear Painful Bumps On My Vagina That Last 2-3 Days,

In someone who is not sexually active, one of the most common things that can cause a small pimple on the inner lip of the vagina is folliculitis. Folliculitis is a bacterial infection that can occur in the area where your pubic hair grows. This usually occurs in moist and warm areas and the lesions are like painful bumps that may look like pimples. It can also be a cyst (fluid filled sac) that may become infected. There is a possibility that it may also be a common dermatitis or skin irritation that, in your case, may result from the fact that you wear thongs that may be rubbing against your skin and irritating the skin.

In those who are sexually active, a lesion like that may also be from the herpes simplex virus, which is a sexually transmitted disease.

TeenHealthFX cannot know for sure what these bumps are without a physical examination, so we recommend that you see a doctor to check it out and give you a clear diagnosis. If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
