Perineum Burning Sensation

Published: December 01, 2015
Dear TeenHealthFX,

This is really embarrassing but... Okay, I'm 17 years old, biologically female. I probably don't drink as much water as I should. I recently developed a yeast infection. I'm not sexually active in any way, it just kind of appeared. And it was itching BADLY. And I have no self control. When it itches, I scratch. But I'd also rub against my clothes in situations where I couldn't scratch. My perineum burns when I pee and I don't know if that's linked with the scratching or if it's a symptom of something else entirely but it's scaring me. I can't even lift my leg to shave it without feeling soreness down there. The yeast infection is gone besides a little left over irritation, but the perineum burns as if it's fresh. So yeah... should I go to the hospital? Is it serious?

Dear Perineum Burning Sensation,

Yeast infections are caused by minute yeast-like fungus called Candida Albicans. Yeast normally live in the vagina in small numbers. In certain situations, the Candida can overwhelm your good bacteria causing excessive growth of yeast or an imbalance of vaginal microorganisms. It's this overgrowth that causes yeast infections.

The first sign of yeast overgrowth is typically an itchy burning rash. Yeast can also spread if you scratch the infection and then touch yourself elsewhere, especially moist areas like the groin and perineum (the area between the anus and the scrotum or vulva.) The yeast infection can be treated with medication-based treatments that address the local symptom but not the root causes of yeast infection. Your symptoms go away but the infection doesn't.

If the burning and itching become unbearable, then you might want to consider the hospital or Emergent Care to get immediate relief. Otherwise you definitely need to see a doctor to get the proper medication. Sometimes over the counter products can remedy the yeast infection but in some cases a prescription is needed. The urgency in your situation seems to becoming from the amount of discomfort you seem to be experiencing. With the right treatment your yeast infection will disappear along with the anxiety.
