Mom Does Not Talk About Puberty

Published: May 14, 2012
Dear TeenHealthFX,

My mom does not like to talk to me about puberty and refused to have me attend sex education class at school, so thus all my education on the subject has come from Health books. I don't have any other female figure to talk to about stuff like crushes, menstruation, or dating so I feel in the dark. Are there any websites that have advice for girls in my situation?

Dear Mom Does Not Talk About Puberty,

There are plenty of websites out there who will offer this information but the trick is to find a website that is reputable and committed to giving the reader good accurate information. When you are on a website always click on the “Who We Are” tab to find out who is providing the information and who the site is sponsored by.

TeenHealthFX.com is a great site for the exact purposes you are looking for. What makes TeenHealthFX even more unique is that there is no interaction between the site and its users. All answers to questions are posted to the site itself which provides complete anonymity for the question sender. Currently there are answers to almost 4,500 questions covering a wide variety of topics having to do with Adolescent Health. Another advantage of this approach is that the content is driven adolescents from all over the world who write in questions. Another great site that uses this format is “Go Ask Alice.”

Here are some other good sites that TeenHealthFX would recommend:

WebMD - Teen Girls' Health

TeensHealth

TeenGrowth

MedlinePlus Teen Health

Tween and Teen Health – Mayo Clinic
