Dear TeenhealthFX,

Hi I am an eleven yo girl and lately I have been having really bad cramps sometimes I can not walk because of them. My parents know but they think it is jist growing pains but could my first period be on its way? Thank you I know fx can not answer all my questions but it would be nice because I am to shy to talk to my parents.

Dear Parents Think it is Growing Pains,

Experiencing the effects of your first period very much fits the definition of “growing pains.” However, you are right; TeenHealthFX cannot tell you exactly what is happening with your body.  However if you are experiencing cramps so bad that you are having difficulty walking, then you need to be seen by a doctor. Tell your parents the level of discomfort you have been experiencing and that you would like to see a doctor. Whatever the issue is it would be a good idea to ask the doctor about puberty and the changes your body is going to go through over the next several years. This way if your parents are uncomfortable talking about the subject you will be prepared. You also can get some great information from TeenHealthFX.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health in Morristown 973-971-6475 or the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health in Summit at 908-522-5757 for an appointment. Outside this area contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood.
