My Girlfriend Is In Pain During Sex

Published: May 14, 2012
Dear TeenHealthFX,
Hello TeenHealthFx, Kind of an odd question i have to ask you, Me and my girlfriend are very much in love for the past year and a half, she loves to fool around and we both want to have sex with each other but when it comes down to it when i try to insert or when she does it, it makes her pain really badly, not even all the way in just the tip makes her face cringe? and she starts to tear, she always tells me to just keep going but i know otherwise and stop it all together myself, i was raised not to put a women in any sort of pain! we are both clean and i was reading about infections and she is a very healthy person. she always starts to cry and says she is sorry but i always comfort her afterwords so we decided to research it more and find out the possibility. it does seem that it started awhile ago but in the start of our relationship she was fine, thank you for all your help.

Dear My Girlfriend Is In Pain During Sex,

TeenHealthFX thinks that it is very important for your girlfriend to meet with a medical health professional for an evaluation so the cause of her pain during intercourse can be determined and she can receive whatever treatment may be necessary.

Pain during intercourse for females could indicate such things as:

·         Inadequate vaginal lubrication: this can occur for a woman if she is not relaxed, if a water-based lubricant is not used when needed, or if there is an insufficient amount of foreplay to help natural lubrication to progress

·         Vaginismus: a common condition in which there is a spasm in the vaginal muscles, mainly due to a fear of being hurt during intercourse

·         vaginal yeast infection

·         cervicitis: infection that causes inflammation of the cervix

·         pelvic inflammatory disease (PID): inflammation or infection of the uterus, fallopian tubes or ovaries

·         endometriosis: the endometrium, the tissue that lines the uterus, grows outside the uterus

·         ovarian cysts

·         STDs: genital warts, herpes sores, and other STDs can cause pain for females during intercourse

·         Injury or trauma to the vulva or vagina

Again, there could be many possible causes of the pain your girlfriend is experiencing during sex – so it is important for her to be evaluated by a doctor as soon as possible. FX also thinks that it is important for your girlfriend to know that she should not be going through any sexual activity that causes her physical pain or emotional discomfort. Please stress to your girlfriend the importance of her speaking up when she is in any kind of distress and to know that it is okay to put a halt on any kind of sexual activity if something – anything – feels wrong about it.

You can give the following information to your girlfriend and encourage her to see a medial health professional right away:

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-6475 for an appointment. You can contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
