Can't Remember If I Took Out My Tampon

Published: July 25, 2016
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I can't remember if I took my tampon out last month and I'm really scared about TSS. I stuck my finger up to feel around a little and I can't feel anything. Do you think that means I'm alright. I'm really scared

Dear Can't Remember If I Took Out My Tampon,

Tampons are held in place by the walls of the vagina and there is nowhere beyond your vagina for the tampon to go. If a woman can’t remember if she took her tampon out, she can always reach into her vagina with a clean finger to see if she can feel it. If she can’t, it is most likely that the tampon had been removed.

In your case, you did check for a tampon in your vagina and did not find any. In addition, if you had left a tampon in for over a month, most likely you would have begun to feel some level of discomfort or irritation by now. Since you were not able to feel a tampon in your vagina, and since it does not sound like you have experienced any pain, discomfort or irritation, TeenHealthFX would say that the chances are you took it out and everything is fine.

If you find, however, that you continue to feel stressed or worried about this, you can schedule an appointment with your primary care physician, gynecologist, or adolescent medicine specialist. Your doctor will be able to confirm this with you and ease any worries you may have.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
