Dear Does Taking Birth Control While You Have Your Period Stop Your Period?,

It is possible to adjust how you are taking the birth control pill if you want to stop your period or prevent a period. However, it is best to do this with instructions from your doctor. When women try to do this on their own it can have a negative impact on the menstrual cycle, as well as a negative impact on the effectiveness of the birth control pill at preventing unwanted pregnancies.

If this is something you would like to do, TeenHealthFX recommends that you contact your doctor’s office so that you can explain the situation and get instructions from a doctor or nurse in the office on what to do. That way you will get instructions on how to do this is a way where you will have continued pregnancy prevention protection and that least disrupts your cycle. Your doctor’s office will also be able to document what was done so that if there are any questions or concerns about your cycle, or anything else in the future related to the pill, they will know what changes were made and when.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
