I Get My Period Twice a Year and It Is Very Heavy

Published: June 30, 2017
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I get my period twice a year and it is very heavy. Even with the biggest pads/really absorbent tampons, I change every 2-2.5 hrs. It is really annoying. They last for a month and there is a big pressure on my abdomen the whole time. As a result, I always get vaginitis. Any help on why this is happening?

Dear I Get My Period Twice a Year and It Is Very Heavy,

TeenHealthFX cannot know exactly why this is happening, but given what you described we do think it is important for you to meet with a doctor, such as your primary care physician, adolescent medicine specialist or gynecologist, so you can find out what is causing the irregular periods, heavy bleeding and vaginitis. Once a doctor has an understanding of what the underlying medical issues are, he/she can make recommendations on how to regulate your periods and deal with the vaginitis.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. A Planned Parenthood health center is a good option if you have concerns about cost or confidentiality issues. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
