Male Virgin Has Blood In Semen

Published: January 18, 2013
Dear TeenHealthFX,
Hello, my name is J****** and I have a friend that is 14 years old and he's having a male problem. I wanted to ask if it was normal to bleed when he would ejaculate but he's still a virgin. He's really embarrassed and doesn't know what to do. May you help?

Dear Male Virgin Has Blood In Semen,

One of the reasons for TeenHealthFX is to provide answers to questions that may go unasked because a young person feels to embarrassed.

The Internet is a great place to learn about a medical a condition, but not the place to go for a diagnosis. For instance, did he injure his penis while masturbating and that was the source of the blood or was it a nocturnal emission with blood mixed in with the ejaculate? Even with this information TeenHealthFX would not be comfortable making a diagnosis over the internet. Without a trained medical person doing an examination and any follow up  lab tests, the best we could do is to provide an educated guess.

Seeing blood when he ejaculated must have been very frightening for your friend and caused him to be alarmed. While it is not normal to have blood in your semen it is not uncommon either. It is referred to as hematospermia and can be caused by a number of factors. The majority of the time it is not cause for serious concern.

Your friend needs to be seen by a doctor so that he can have his condition examined and get an accurate diagnosis. He might be embarrassed about going, but once he understands what is going on with his body his anxiety will be significantly reduced. Medical professionals also understand that teens are sensitive to issues like this and do their best to make them comfortable.

If your friend doesn't have a doctor and lives in northern New Jersey, he can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health in Morristown 973-971-6475 or the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health in Summit at 908-522-5757 for an appointment. Outside this area contact a local Adolescent Medicine Specialist, your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood.
