Acne In Pubic Hair

Published: July 31, 2013
Dear TeenHealthFX,

Dear Teen Health FX, I am a 13 year old male and I was wondering if it is possible to get acne in one's pubic hair?

Dear Acne In Pubic Hair,

Yes it is possible to get acne in the pubic region. The spots are an inflammation of the hair follicle (folliculitis.) They appear as red bumps that can be itchy and tender. The condition has many potential causes, including friction, bacteria, fungi and yeasts. Folliculitis pimples in the pubic area are treatable and can be cleared up.

There are also other medical conditions that present is a similar manner and that is why it is so important that your condition be diagnosed by doctor before you begin some form of home treatment.

A Dermatologist (skin doctor) very often can diagnose folliculitis simply by looking at your skin. Your doctor might also take a sample taken from one of your pustules and send it to the lab to check for the presence of bacteria. Once diagnosed, he/she will be able to tell you how to treat the condition and what precautions you can take to avoid it in the future.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health in Morristown 973-971-6475 or the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health in Summit at 908-522-5757 for an appointment. Outside of this area you can contact your insurance company for a referral or a local teen health center.
