Blood In Ejaculate

Published: October 30, 2012
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I had sex with my boyfriend and I let him cum in my mouth when he's done. Most of the time I swallow but today I decided to spit it out and when I did there was just blood mixed in there. I checked myself and there's no blood coming out of me. While giving head could he have pushed me so far down I bled inside my mouth or tore something?

Dear Blood In Ejaculate,

That could be a possibility or the blood came from your boyfriend. If you had an injury that caused you to bleed then you would most likely notice discomfort in your mouth or throat. The critical issue is that there was an open wound and an exchange of bodily fluids. This is the most common way that HIV and other STD’s are transmitted.

The risk of becoming infected with HIV through unprotected oral sex is lower than that of unprotected anal or vaginal sex. But remember that even a lower risk activity does not mean any risk. Correct and consistent use of condoms can help in preventing the spread of AIDs. Keep in mind that aside from HIV, a person receiving oral sex can be exposed to other types of STDs. A person who has oral herpes can pass it along by giving oral sex. Any time you have unprotected sex with someone, you are placing yourself at risk of getting an STD.

TeenHealthFX hopes you will practice safer sex in the future. You can protect yourself and your partner from STD's during oral sex by using a condom - they make flavored ones for just that purpose. If you are performing oral sex on a woman, you can use a dental dam (a square of latex) or make your own dental dam by cutting a condom down the side.
