Worried About Blood From Anal Sex

Published: May 31, 2013
Dear TeenHealthFX,

My boyfriend and I had anal sex yesterday and afterwards it bled a lot. Today it still is bleeding but I don't feel any pain. Should I be worried (as I am) and how long will this last?

Dear Worried About Blood From Anal Sex,

As long as you were practicing Safe Anal Sex there is not a great need to worry. Serious injury from anal sex is not common. The tissue of the anus is delicate and is prone to tearing because it lacks edacity and does not have any natural lubrication. If you are experiencing bleeding from the anus after anal sex, it is possible that the lining of the anus was cut or torn in some way. An open cut in the anus is at greater risk for infection because of the amount of bacteria present. If you begin experiencing pain or the blood flow increases or does not stop then you should see a medical professional right away.

TeenHealthFX recommends you take some time off from having anal sex to give the area time to heal. If you do have anal sex in the future, make sure the area is well-lubricated (as noted below) and stop if you notice any pain or discomfort.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
