Pill in Morning Instead of Night

Published: May 14, 2012
Dear TeenHealthFX,

I have been taking the contraceptive pill now for a few months and have been taking it on the night. But I am going away on holiday on Saturday and was wondering if I could change when I take my pill to the morning instead of the night as I will be unable to take it at night.

Would really appreciate your answers as I am unsure on what to do.

Dear Pill in Morning Instead of Night,

The best way to get the most accurate answer to your question is to ask the doctor who is prescribing your birth control medication. Your doctor would know your medication as well as your medical history. You could also get good information from the pharmacist/chemist where you purchase your medication.

When using the pill, it's important to take your birth control pill at the same time each day. Taking the pill daily, at the same time makes it more effective. Typically, most birth control pills have about a 1- to 2-hour window period where effectiveness is not compromised. Most healthcare professions will advise that being off an hour, in either direction, does not generally make a difference, especially if taking your pill earlier as opposed to later.

If you are traveling to a place where the time zone is different you want to take this into account when taking your pill. If it only an hour difference either way then you could probably take your pill at the same time that you normally would.
