Dear Does Masturbation Affect Penis Growth?,

The Young Men’s Health website through Boston Children’s Hospital presents the following information on Penis Size:

Is there a normal penis size?

Bodies come in all different shapes and sizes - that's partly what makes each of us special and different from each other. It's important to understand that the size of a guy's penis is determined by genetic traits that he inherits from his parents - just like we inherit our height, eye color, and skin tone. The studies that have been conducted list the average adult penis size between 5 and 6 inches when fully erect, as measured from the lowest portion of the stomach, just above the base of the penis, to the tip of the penis.

Comparing yourself to other guys may lead you to believe that your penis is different in size. However, it's important to keep in mind that we all develop on different schedules. You may look different from that guy in the locker room who is three years older than you. Even guys the same age can develop more quickly or slowly. Be patient - late bloomers will eventually catch up to the rest of the pack. Most guys are fully developed between the ages of 18 and 21.

For more information, including when penises grow in size, can size be changed and what a teen can do if he is worried his penis is too small, you can read the full article on Penis Size or speak to your doctor. If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.

As for your second question, masturbation does not affect penis growth. The size of your penis depends on your genes in the same way your genes determine the size of your hands or feet or the color of your hair or your eyes. There are many myths out there about masturbation, but the fact is that there is nothing wrong with doing it as long as it doesn’t become a constant desire and/or get in the way of doing other things you need or want to do. Again, if you have questions about masturbation, check in with your doctor or read the Young Men’s Health article on Masturbation.
