Is it Weird That I Wish I Hadn't Been Circumcised?

Published: August 17, 2016
Dear TeenHealthFX,
my parents circumcised me when i was a baby because of their religion (that i don't even believe in anyway). is it weird that i wish that i was still intact? i know that ultimately, as long as you keep your penis healthy then you're okay, but i've read lots of articles and scientific studies saying that when you're circumcised, you're more likely to get STDs, STIs, UTIs, etc. because the foreskin protects the glans from all that. plus, excluding the health reasons, i just think circumcised penises look weird, especially on me. it's like giving your penis plastic surgery because that's kind of what it is. i feel like i've lost a part of me and i don't know why i feel this way. i think something's wrong because most guys don't care about whether or not they have a foreskin. please respond soon

Dear Is it Weird That I Wish I Hadn't Been Circumcised?,

TeenHealthFX does not think that you are “weird” for feeling this way. We are all entitled to whatever feelings we may have. Something was done to you as a baby that you had no say in or control over and it can’t be reversed. It is understandable that you might have feelings about that.

What could be an issue here is how much you feel you are consumed by your thoughts and feelings about this. Everyone will have things happen to them in life that they have negative feelings about. The key is to find a way to manage those feelings and find a sense of peace or acceptance with certain situations so that we don’t end up feeling ruled by them or tormented by them. So our question to you is do you feel you are simply able to acknowledge that you have negative feelings about your parents’ decision to circumcise you or you feel these thoughts and feelings are becoming intrusive? If it’s the latter, than FX recommends that you talk to a trusted adult about this, such as one of your parents, an extended family member, a school counselor or a private therapist so you can get a better understanding of why you are having such a hard time coming to terms with this. Again, having negative feelings about being circumcised is not weird or problematic, but if you are having trouble managing these feelings than that could be a problem.

FX would also like to respond to the information you presented about the medical concerns with being circumcised because there actually are some medical benefits. According to KidsHealth circumcised men might be at lower risk for penile cancer. There are also some studies that indicate the procedure might actually offer an additional line of defense against STDs. Penile problems, such as irritation, inflammation and infect are also less common in circumcised men compared to men who are not circumcised.

If you live in northern New Jersey and need help finding a therapist you can call the Access Center from Atlantic Behavioral Health at 888-247-1400. Outside of this area you can log onto the US Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration website for referrals in your area. You can also contact your insurance company to get a list of in-network mental health providers or check with your school social worker or psychologist to get a list of referrals in your area.
