5 Small Reddish Bumps

Published: July 01, 2014
Dear TeenHealthFX,

I'm 16 years old and a virgin. On my penis penis shaft, towards the side, there are a group of five small reddish bumps that more or less blend in with my skin. However, when erect they get very red and prominent. I first noticed it about a year ago, but there was only one bump then, and now there's a small cluster of them (It hasn't spread any more besides that.) Is this normal or should I be concerned? I thought it might've been clogged hair follicles but I'm unsure. I don't believe it's any type of STI or STD as I've never had sex.

Dear 5 Small Reddish Bumps,

If you have never had any sexual contact then you can probably rule out any type of sexual disease. It doesn’t sound like your situation is serious but TeenHealthFX cannot say that with certainty. You need to be evaluated by a medical professional so that you know for sure. Getting the scoop from a doctor who has examined you is the only way to know if you should be concerned or not. You should also always err of the side of caution. Your health is not something you want to gamble with.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health in Morristown 973-971-6475 or the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health in Summit at 908-522-5757 for an appointment. Outside this area contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood.
