I Want To Look Normal

Published: May 14, 2012
Dear TeenHealthFX,

This summer I have a membership to a community pool. Many of my friends also have a membership here. I am super excited to spend my summer poolside hanging out with my friends, but when we are in the locker room I feel very embarrassed. My friends have no problem quickly slipping off their bathing suits and putting on underwear in front of people. Especially since no one is really looking. But I feel uncomfortable because I'm not sure whether or not I should shave my pubic hair. I don't know what is most often done. My fear is that I will be abnormal. I know none of my friends is gonna look at me, but if they accidently did, I want to look normal. I really don't need that rumor circling. Please, please help me! Thank You.

Dear I Want To Look Normal,

A big fear of many adolescents is that they don’t want to be seen as different then from their peers. This is no standard practice when it comes to shaving the pubic region. It is entirely a personal decision. Some women choose to shave for cosmetic reasons while others may shave because it's their preference when being physically intimate with their significant other. Other women do not want to go through the time or deal with some of the negative aspects of shaving such as razor burn, bumps or allergies to the shaving products involved.

Many women prefer waxing to shaving. Waxing is a method of semi-permanent hair removal which removes the hair from the root. New hair will not grow back in the previously waxed area for two to eight weeks. However, TeenHealthFX really feels strongly that a teen-aged female should get this done professionally at first in order to learn how to do it. They can help teach you so that when you do wax yourself, it can be done safely.  You could also consider closely trimming your hair instead. It provides many of the benefits of shaving without the risk.

It would be a good idea to talk to your mom about this issue. All though it might be embarrassing, your mom was a teenager once and would probably understand. Also your mom probably speaks with other mothers and could an idea from them what their daughters are doing. You could also ask your friends their thoughts on “shaving verses waxing.”

In the end it is up to you to pick what is the best method for you. Take our word for it, one way is not more “normal” then another. It simply comes down to a matter of preference.
