Worried Over Lost Pubic Hairs

Published: May 21, 2012
Dear Worried Over Lost Pubic Hairs,

Help! I am a 15 year old male and whenever I go to the bathroom, I notice 2-4 pubic hairs on the tip of my penis. This is worrying me because that seems like a lot of hair to be losing. I don't lose it in clumps but I am still worried. Please help.

Dear Worried Over Lost Pubic Hairs,

TeenHealthFX wants to assure you that losing 2-4 hairs is nothing to worry about. Everyone loses hair every day from their head and body – it’s perfectly normal. In fact, most people lose between 50-100 hairs a day from their head alone.

If someone ever notices losing hair in clumps, finding bald patches where there used to be hair, or sees a noticeable thinning of hair, it’s definitely worth mentioning to a doctor just to make sure there are no underlying medical issues. But a couple of hairs a day is nothing to stress over.

Puberty in guys usually starts between 10 and 12 and changes can continue up until 20 years old. If you are not noticing any changes associated with puberty during this time (i.e., you are not getting any pubic hair) do check in with your doctor about it.

Keep in mind that there are so many things going on with the body during puberty, it can make guys and girls very aware of every little change and often anxious about what is going on. If you need more information on puberty, check out the information on puberty from Children’s Hospital Boston, as well as Puberty for Guys through Planned Parenthood.

If you continue to worry about this, talk to your doctor about it. Sometimes it is worth it to have something checked out just to ease our own fears about it. If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-5199 for an appointment with an adolescent medicine specialist or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
