Not Sure if I Had Sex

Published: January 31, 2013
Dear TeenHealthFX,
My boyfriend and I are unsure if we had sex or not. Does it count if only the tip of his penis entered my vagina? If so, this only occurred for 5 minutes or less. We didnt have a condom but the next day my period came and lasted about 6 days. Also, about 30 or 45 minutes later, he ejaculated completely away from my body for the first time that night. What are the chances of me being pregnant. I'm so worried and am desperate for an answer.

Dear Not Sure if I Had Sex,

TeenHealthFX does not have a definitive answer as to what constitutes sex, but we can tell you that you put yourself at risk for pregnancy. Whenever wet or moist semen comes in contact with the vaginal opening then there is a slight possibility of pregnancy. If semen enters the vagina then the risk becomes more significant

It is highly unlikely that you got pregnant if your period came after you had unprotected sex, although it is not entirely out of the realm of possibility. A pregnancy test is the best way to tell if you are pregnant or not. You should wait until you miss your next period to get the most accurate results. You could have the test performed at your doctor’s office, a health clinic or purchase a home pregnancy test at the Pharmacy.

If you are engaging in any type of sexual activity it is important for you to educate yourself on how to protect yourself from unwanted pregnancies as well as protecting yourself fromsexually transmitted diseases.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health in Morristown 973-971-6475 or the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health in Summit at 908-522-5757 for an appointment. Outside this area contact a local Adolescent Medicine Specialist, your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood.
