Virgin or No Virgin

Published: February 01, 2014
Dear TeenHealthFX,

My boyfriend and I were making out and ended up getting undressed, he positioned his penis where it would go in but as soon as I felt it start to I panicked and moved out so it wouldn't go in all the way, but I felt something and we noticed later that there was blood on the bed. (My hymen?) I was just wondering, how far does it have to go in to not be considered a virgin anymore? Because I know breaking your hymen doesn't define your virginity, but if it's with a penis, does it? Even if it doesn't go further than that? Please help.

Dear Virgin or No Virgin,

TeenHealthFX doesn’t necessarily have an exact definition as to what constitutes a person losing her/his virginity. For many reason we think it tends to be up to the individual person to define it for themselves.

However, let’s looks at the question from a different perspective. “How far in would it have to go before I could get pregnant?” The answer is - not very far. A penis with just that has only leaked pre-cum fluid that brushes up the vaginal opening would put you at risk for pregnancy. If the penis enters the vaginal opening then the risk becomes greater.

If you miss your period you can either take a home pregnancy test or meet with your primary care physician, gynecologist or an adolescent medicine specialist to find out if you are pregnant.

FX also recommends that you speak with your doctor about safer sex so that you can protect yourself in the future from unwanted pregnancies and the transmission of STDs. You can find information about any of these topics by using the search feature on the TeenHealthFX website.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health in Morristown 973-971-6475 or the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health in Summit at 908-522-5757 for an appointment. Outside this area contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood.
