Are Homosexuals More Likely To Be Promiscuous Than Heterosexuals?

Published: May 14, 2012
Dear TeenHealthFX,
Is it true that homosexuals are more likely to engage in sexually promiscuous activity than heterosexuals? I have read many statistics that say they do.

Dear Are Homosexuals More Likely To Be Promiscuous Than Heterosexuals?,

LGB (lesbian, gay and bisexual) people are neither more nor less sexually promiscuous than heterosexuals. You will find LGB people who are involved in monogamous relationships, some of whom have committed themselves to their partners for life, just as you will find heterosexual people who have done the same. You will find some LGB people who choose to remain celibate, just as some heterosexual people do. And you will find that there are LBG people who will have multiple partners – but there are plenty of heterosexual people out there who have multiple partners, are sexually promiscuous, may cheat on their significant others, or have one-night stands as well.

There are many myths about LGB people and labels that have been given to this population that are false. These myths and labels generally do not come out of fact, but out of people’s prejudices, hate, ignorance, and fear. Myths and false labels about LGB people have included things like LBG people are a menace to children, all LGB people cross-dress, LGB people are more promiscuous than heterosexuals, LGB people are mentally ill, LGB people can be changed or “cured” of their sexual orientation, and LGB people are the only population out there contracting HIV/AIDS. Again, some of these false beliefs come from a lack of education (or from the spread of misinformation), and others are there because of the negative feelings people can have towards people who are not heterosexual.

TeenHealthFX thinks that it is important to remember four things when it comes to labels about certain populations:

1.      The first is that there is rarely a time when you can use the words “always” or “never” to describe entire populations of people. Heterosexuals are definitely not always in monogamous relationships where they are always faithful and loyal to their partners – some are and some aren’t. And the same can be said for LGB people.

2.      There is more to a person than just his/her sexual orientation, and there is more to being gay than sexual relationships with other people. So don’t sell individuals short by presuming things about them based on stereotypes and false labels before you get to know who they are and how they tick.

3.      Labels, such as ones like LGB people are more promiscuous than heterosexuals, are often based more in prejudice and a lack of education (or from people spreading misinformation) than in fact and reality.

4.      Labels about various populations about people – whether they are labels about people of different races, genders, sexual orientation, religions, or whatever else, can be dangerous because they can contribute to ongoing prejudice and discrimination.
