Thinking Everyone Wants to be With Me

Published: February 27, 2014
Dear TeenHealthFX,

I'm a 21 year old transgender man. For as long as I've had sexual impulses, I've thought that almost everyone I come across wants to have sex with me. As a result, I have sex with a lot of people, but I get a lot of anxiety wondering if I'm interpreting friends' body language wrong and that I'll make a move and they won't be interested. It's really confusing, thinking everyone wants to be with me. And I don't know how to turn it off.

Dear Thinking Everyone Wants to be With Me,

While it is good self-esteem to that you think others are attracted to you, it is just not realistic to think everyone you meet wants to have sex with you. While body language can certainly communicate a lot about a person, it is all relies on interpretation. Where things can go wrong is in the approach. This is why communication is so important. If you decide to approach someone, always start of slowly and engage the person in a conversation. As you converse you will be able to tell more about the person and gage his/her reaction to you. By communicating, you also will have the chance to ask the person if they have any feelings or desire towards you. If their response overrides whatever perceptions you may have had going into the conversation and the person is not interested, then you need to respect his/her decision. It is important that you recognize that not everyone we meet is going to have a romantic attraction to us. It can be disappointing but it is not something that you should take personally. The law of attraction is confusing and often times make no sense. On the positive side, there will be times when the attraction occurs. You never know, it might be the person you have been waiting to show up and didn’t even know it.

You did say in your letter that you wind up having sex with a lot of people. TeenHealthFX would just like to remind you that multiple partners put you at greater risk for Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD’s). It is essential that you use condoms each and every time.
