Nervous To Buy Condoms

Published: July 31, 2013
Dear TeenHealthFX,

Ok so I'm 16 and I want to buy a condom just to practice using one. Well to be honest I'm nervous because of my age. I'm worried they wont sell the condom to me and get me in trouble mostly with my parents. I don't want to go to Planned Parenthood. Can u please give me tips to get over my nervousness?

Dear Nervous To Buy Condoms,

It is not unusual for a person to feel nervous or self-conscious when buying condoms. Usually the underlying issue is that he/she is worried about what other people think when they see the product in his/her hand. It is like you are telegraphing that you are going to have sex and that can be embarrassing.

TeenHealthFX is not sure why you do not want to go to Planned Parenthood as that would most likely give you the least exposure to the public and it would be handled in a confidential manner.

There really is no legal age to buy condoms in the United States so you don’t have to be worried about being proofed or denied the purchase. If your parents found out you bought condoms, it will most likely be because they were found in your room and not because you bought them. Even though you think they might get mad, what exactly is your fear? They may have personal or religious reason why they don’t want you engaging in sex and you should hear them out.

Ultimately you are going to make the decision for yourself. TeenHealthFX cannot tell you what is right for you but we can tell you that sex comes with the responsibility of taking precautions against pregnancy and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD’s.) Getting caught with condoms is going to have a significantly less impact on your life then becoming a father at 16 or becoming HIV positive.

WikiHow has a great article on “How to Buy Condoms Discreetly.”
