Natural Remedies Not Curing Infection

Published: May 31, 2012
Dear Natural Remedies Not Curing Infection,
Hi. I am having my first yeast infection and my mom told me if I put a peeled cucumber about 2 inches long into my vagina, it will absorb the infection. I've had it for a little over two weeks now and the infection seems to be getting WORSE. I did a search on the internet and I can't seem to find any articles about it either way. My mom wont let me use products from the drug store (she is worried about addiction) and my family only believes in natural remedies. Is there a natural way to cure this horrible infection?? Thanks a lot!!

Dear Natural Remedies Not Curing Infection,

It is not clear whether this is a self diagnosis or one identified by a doctor. To be on the safe side here is some information on yeast infections. A yeast infection occurs in the vaginal area because of an excessive growth of yeast or an imbalance of vaginal microorganisms.  They are not sexually transmitted and can have many causes.  Some include the use of antibiotics or steroids, wearing tight clothing in the vaginal area, frequent douching, strong soaps, pregnancy, diabetes and other illnesses.

Symptoms of a yeast infection are:

  • Increase in amount of discharge
  • Change in consistency of discharge (white, curd-like or lumpy)
  • Change in smell of discharge (yeast like smell)
  • Change in the color of discharge (gray or green color)
  • Painful or uncomfortable intercourse
  • Swelling or redness in the vaginal area
  • Itching or burning in the vaginal area
  • Pain while urinating

While cucumbers are known to have some medicinal uses, there is no creditable evidence that they can cure a yeast infection by inserting them in the vagina. The cucumber is member of the gourd family is very low in calories, containing virtually no fats or sodium and very few carbohydrates, and high in water content and does not contain cholesterol. It is a great choice for weight loss diets and for those suffering from hypoglycemia. The Chinese system of healing considers it a "cooling" food, using it to ease inflammation, burns, and pink eye.

Research recommends that people who are prone to yeast infections avoid any food containing sugar or sugar substitute and certain other foods. Many diets that are suggested for reducing yeast infections include cucumbers. So while there are some preventative aspects to the cucumber and yeast infections there are no curative properties.

It is great that your mom takes a holistic approach to your health but if you are not seeing results then you need to see a doctor. This is especially critical because as you noted the infection was getting “WORSE.”  Yeast infections are very treatable.  There are over the counter medications, but for teenagers we recommend seeing a doctor.  As a teenager your body is changing, a doctor can examine you and make sure everything is okay.  Also, the doctor can answer any of your questions and address your mother’s concern about medication and addiction. The doctor will be able to prescribe the right kind of medication for you to alleviate your symptoms. It is extremely important that you follow through with a doctor because a yeast infection will not go away by itself.
