Should I Talk To Doctor About Masturbation

Published: July 01, 2015
Dear TeenHealthFX,

I'm 18 a virgin and haven't had any sexual experience with someone else.I masturbate though and lately have started fingering myself. So in the past I had noticed that my vagina smelled a lot like fish and looked that up,so I went on a gyn and he gave me pills to fight the smell and the itchiness(basically the infection). After I finished the pills the smell was kinda gone but the itchiness had stayed and while I'm fingering myself I'm burning like hell and it feels really "aouchy ".Is that normal through penetration!?Should I talk to my doctor about masturbation?

Dear Should I Talk To Doctor About Masturbation,

Most often unpleasant vaginal odor is the result of a vaginal infection.  Bacterial vaginosis causes a "fishy"-like odor. Bacterial vaginosis is a mild infection in the vagina caused by a type of bacteria (germ). The vagina normally contains a lot of "good" bacteria, called lactobacilli (lack-toe bah-sil-li), and a few other types of bacteria, called anaerobes (ann-air-robes). Too many anaerobes can cause bacterial vaginosis. It is not known why the anaerobe bacteria overgrow and cause this infection.

You should definably talk to your doctor about your situation. Your Physician can do a culture for specific bacteria as well as check the acid level of the vagina. If bacterial vaginosis or any infection is present it can be treated in one of several different ways.

Remember your symptoms go away but the infection doesn't. If this is the case, then the friction and pressure from masturbation could be very painful.
